Support your teaching career with the Nurse Faculty Loan Program

Learn how the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) can help cover academic costs while you prepare to become a nurse educator.

What is the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP)?

The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) is a federal loan program designed to support nursing students who plan to become nurse educators. The program helps reduce educational costs while encouraging graduates to pursue teaching roles in schools of nursing.

At IU Indianapolis, the NFLP provides loan funding to eligible graduate nursing students. Up to 85% of the loan may be forgiven for graduates who work as full-time nurse faculty for four years after completing their degree.

The loan has a fixed interest rate of 3 percent for students who obtain full-time employment as nurse faculty at an accredited school of nursing. For borrowers who don’t complete their program or obtain full-time employment as nurse faculty within the required timeframe, the loan will bear interest at the prevailing market rate.

How do I know if I’m eligible for the Nurse Faculty Loan Program?

You may be a good candidate for the NFLP if you:

  • Have filed the FAFSA
  • Are enrolled in an eligible graduate nursing program at IU Indianapolis
  • Intend to pursue a career as a nurse educator after graduation
  • Meet federal eligibility requirements for student financial aid
  • Can commit to the service obligation required for loan forgiveness

Participation is limited, and funding availability may vary by academic year.

What service commitment is required for loan forgiveness?

You are eligible for progress towards NFLP cancellation if your post-graduation employment is one of the following:

  • Employment as a full-time faculty member at an accredited school of nursing.
  • Employment as a part-time faculty member at an accredited school of nursing in combination with another part-time faculty position (e.g., part-time clinical preceptor, part-time clinical educator, etc.) affiliated with an accredited school.
  • Employment as a full-time advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) preceptor for an accredited school within an academic-practice partnership framework.

How do I apply for the Nurse Faculty Loan Program?

Students must apply separately for the NFLP in addition to completing standard financial aid steps.

General application steps include:

  1. Completing the FAFSA
  2. Submitting the IU Indianapolis NFLP application
  3. Providing any required supporting documentation

If you are offered NFLP funds, you can accept your loan on One.IU. Afterwards, University Collections and Loan Services will contact you at your university email address and on your To-Do List to notify you to sign your promissory note. Complete the process as soon as you can to avoid delays in your funding.
