The Chancellor’s Medallion honors exceptional vision, teaching, research, and alumni accomplishment at IU Indianapolis.

About the Chancellor’s Medallion

In 1989, campus leaders envisioned a special award for people of outstanding character, vision, achievement, and distinguished service. The first Chancellor’s Medallion was awarded to Jonathan Weidberg in 2000, followed by more than two decades of impressive honorees.

Criteria

  • High achievement in the arts and humanities, sciences, or education.
  • Significant accomplishment in a profession or within the commercial world.
  • Distinguished service as a public official including service on the local, state, national, or international levels.
  • Significant philanthropic endeavors or service to the community including service to the local, state, national, or international communities.

Nomination guidelines

  • Nominees must have a connection with IU Indianapolis.
  • Nominees must not be current employees (faculty, staff, or administrators). In addition, nominees who are in elected or local, state, or federal positions are not eligible until their term of office/appointment has been completed.
  • Nominations may only be submitted by the executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer, vice chancellors, and deans.
  • The chancellor will confer with the cabinet semi-annually to review nominee qualifications and determine to whom to award the Chancellor’s Medallion.
  • The chancellor will present the Chancellor’s Medallion at an occasion determined most suitable for the recipient.

How to nominate

Nominators should submit a nomination packet using the nomination form.

  • Submit a narrative no longer than two pages briefly describing the individual’s distinguished professional achievements and the exceptional service that has benefitted IU Indianapolis.
  • Provide the nominee’s CV or resume.
  • Include a one-page letter from a secondary nominator supporting the nomination.

Indiana University Police Department at IUPUI captain received a Chancellor’s Medallion on January 29, 2021. 

Bill Abston 

Indiana University Police Department at IUPUI deputy chief received a Chancellor’s Medallion on January 29, 2021. 

Dr. Zao Cheng Xu 

Founding executive director of the Confucius Institute and professor emeritus of anatomy and cell biology received a Chancellor’s Medallion on August 21, 2020.

Purdue University trustee emeritus received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion on December 11, 2019. 

Dr. Philip Eskew, Jr. 

IU trustee emeritus received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion on December 11, 2019. 

Gerald L. Bepko 

IUPUI chancellor emeritus received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion during the Bepko Scholar Recognition Dinner on September 11, 2019. 

Robert Martin 

Retired IUPUI vice chancellor for administration and finance received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion on June 18, 2019, at an Indiana Members Credit Union Board Meeting. 

Erwin Boschmann 

Professor emeritus of chemistry and former associate dean of faculties received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion on June 5, 2019, at the School of Science’s “Science on Tap” event. 

Simon Rhodes 

Dean of the School of Science received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion on May 17, 2019, during his going-away reception. 

Sarah Evans Barker 

Senior judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion on May 11, 2019, during IUPUI Commencement. 

Matthew Steward 

Founder and president of the Steward Speakers Power Series received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion on May 9, 2019, during the Steward Speakers Lecture Series with Phylicia Rashad. 

Curt Simic 

Indiana University Foundation president emeritus received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion during the Cox Scholars graduation ceremony on May 6, 2019. 

Jesse and Beulah Cox 

Benefactors of the Cox Scholars Program, the largest scholarship program at IUPUI and Indiana University, were posthumously presented with an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion during the Cox Scholars graduation ceremony on May 6, 2019.

Professor of computer and information technology and director of the CyberLab in the School of Engineering and Technology received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion during the School of Engineering and Technology Bepko Honors Convocation on April 18, 2019.

Former executive vice chancellor and dean of the faculties at IUPUI received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion during the Chancellor’s Academic Honors Convocation on April 18, 2019.

Founding dean of University College received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion during the Division of Undergraduate Education Spring Awards Convocation on April 11, 2019.

The group received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion during the Elite 50 dinner on April 10, 2019.

Joseph and Hertha Taylor 

Founding dean of the IU School of Liberal Arts Joseph Taylor posthumously received an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Medallion at the 30th Annual Taylor Symposium on February 20, 2019, as did his wife, Hertha. The Taylors’ children, Judy and Hussain, accepted the award on their behalf.

Madam C.J. Walker 

Successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, and social activist was posthumously awarded the IUPUI Chancellor’s Medallion during the 2018 Commencement Ceremony on May 12, 2018. Ms. A’Lelia Bundles, Madam Walker’s great-great-granddaughter, accepted the award. 

William M. Plater 

Chancellor’s Professor emeritus and executive vice chancellor and dean of the faculties emeritus received the Chancellor’s Medallion at the State of the Campus address on November 7, 2017. 

Alpha Blackburn 

President and CEO of Blackburn Architects, Inc., and longtime member of the IUPUI Board of Advisors received the Chancellor’s Medallion at the board’s Summer Reception on June 21, 2017. 

Trudy Banta 

Professor of higher education and senior advisor to the chancellor for academic planning and evaluation at IUPUI received the Chancellor’s Medallion at her retirement celebration on June 23, 2016. 

Gene Tempel 

Founding dean of the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and president emeritus of the IU Foundation received the Chancellor’s Medallion at his retirement celebration on September 4, 2014.

Former deputy mayor of Indianapolis and IUPUI professor received the Chancellor’s Medallion at his retirement celebration on May 13, 2014.

Karen Lake Buttrey 

Great friend of IUPUI, Indiana University, and the city of Indianapolis was awarded the Chancellor’s Medallion posthumously at the 8th Annual Thomas H. Lake Lecture on March 24, 2011.
