Start your federal loan journey off right

When you borrow from the federal direct loan program, there are a few things you must do to receive your funds.

Get your entrance counseling done

The first time you receive a Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan or a Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan, you must go through online entrance counseling, where you’ll learn about the federal loans you’re borrowing and the options you’ll have to repay them.

Note: If you are the recipient of a Parent PLUS loan, you do not have to complete entrance counseling.

Sign your Master Promissory Note

As a first-time borrower, you also need to complete an online Master Promissory Note (MPN). This legal document explains the terms and conditions of your student loan. By signing it, you promise to repay your loans and any interest and fees. You must sign it before loan funds can be credited to your bursar account.

To sign your MPN, you’ll need:

  • Your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID
  • Your social security number
  • Your driver’s license number
  • Your permanent address and telephone number
  • Information for two references, including their addresses and telephone numbers. The first reference should be a parent or legal guardian. References must have different addresses and telephone numbers.

To sign the MPN, use your FSA ID to log into your direct loan account and select “Complete MPN.”
