Earn your spot on the Dean's List

Each fall and spring semester, undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance are recognized by being named to the Dean's List for that semester.

Dean's List Requirements

Each fall and spring semester, the Dean's List recognizes degree-seeking undergraduate students who completed at least 12 credits at IU Indianapolis and earned a semester GPA of at least 3.5 for that term.

FAQ

When is the Dean's List published?

The Dean's List is published in late January for the fall and late June for the spring. There is no Dean's List for summer terms.

How will I be notified that I'm on the Dean's List?

Students will be notified via their campus email address that they are on the Dean's List. They will also receive a Dean's List notation on their transcript, which is the official record of being named to the list.

I do not want my name publicly listed. Can I have it removed?

Yes! Email the Division of Undergraduate Education to have your name removed from the public listing. This will not remove the Dean's List notation from your transcript.

Is the Dean's List open to all students?

There is one Dean's List for all IU Indianapolis students. Only undergraduate, degree-seeking students are eligible for the Dean's List.

Does being on the Dean's List qualify me to graduate with distinction?

Not necessarily. The Dean's List is semester-specific and is different from graduation distinction. Find more details on graduating with academic distinction.

Can I get a certificate showing that I'm on the Dean's List?

Students are notified via email when they have been named to the Dean's List and a notation is added to students' transcripts. These are the official certifications of being named to the list; there are no PDF or printed certificates. Students needing to submit certification of their Dean's List recognition to external entities may provide the email or a copy of their transcripts.

Based on the eligibility criteria, I think I should have been named to the Dean's List. Why am I not listed on the website?

There are a few reasons you may not be on the public list:

  • If you have an Incomplete (I) or Deferred (R) grade for the semester, they are not counted toward the 12-credit minimum requirement.

  • You took fewer than 12 credits at IU Indianapolis during the semester.
  • You have chosen to restrict the release of certain information to the public. In this case, you will still receive an email about your recognition and the transcript notation, but you will not be included in the public listing.

If you have further questions, contact the Division of Undergraduate Education.

My class standing is wrong on the Dean's List. What happened?

Class standing (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) is determined by credit hours, not how many years you've been at IU Indianapolis. If you transferred credit, including dual credit or AP credit, or took fewer than full-time semester loads, your class standing may be different than you expect.

I had a grade change and now meet the criteria for Dean's List. Can I be added to the list?

The public Dean's List is determined within a few weeks of a semester's end. If a grade change after that results in you being eligible for the Dean's List, contact your school to request the notation on your transcript. In these instances, the public list will not be updated.
