Combining Learning with Service
Writing about Gen Z in this week’s edition of the Economist, Rachana Shanbhogue and Callum Williams describe ways in which that generation is transforming the world of work and society at large. Of course, this article hit home to me because so many of our students at IU Indianapolis—and especially our graduating seniors—are Gen Z.
The authors found that while Gen Z’s commitment to employers may be weaker than seen in previous generations and their reliance on social media is often seen as concerning, they are nevertheless shaping society in positive ways. They are more concerned about climate change and more likely to take action compared to previous generations. Furthermore, the authors point out that Gen Zs are less likely to indulge in late nights and binge drinking.
At IU Indianapolis, the student celebrations over the past week, which continue through commencement in early May, remind us that we have much to celebrate in our graduating Gen Z students as well as all of our students. At the IUPUI Top 100, the Elite 50, the Academic Honors Convocation, and other awards ceremonies, the students’ stories focus on academic success coupled with their strong desire to serve the community. Whether it is volunteering at a legal clinic, translating in a medical setting, or a myriad of other forms of service, our students are focused on making the world a better place.
A great example: first-gen graduating senior Oriana Fuenmayor interned at a non-profit focused on domestic violence prevention and Women4Change, which promotes the health, safety and respect of all Hoosiers. She plans to give back to her community by pursuing volunteer opportunities and supporting efforts to make education accessible for disadvantaged students. Oriana is majoring global and international studies and political science, with minors in legal studies and Africana studies, and I know she will go far.
At a public urban research university, our students experience the joy of combining learning and research with public service.
I’m incredibly proud of all of our students, and this season of celebration and recognition is one of the highlights of the year!
Go Jags!
