From the Lab to the Future: Juan Delvasto’s IU Indianapolis Journey
Around campus, I have had the pleasure of meeting students whose story stays with you, whose curiosity, work ethic, and heart remind you why we do what we do.
Juan Delvasto is one of those students.
Through the 1st Year Research Immersion Program (1RIP), Juan was matched with Dr. Lindsey Mayo, and together they’ve explored high-impact research in molecular cancer biology, sustainable food systems, and the cellular effectiveness of chemotherapy treatments. He’s now also part of our Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), co-authoring papers, analyzing complex data, and helping drive scientific discovery.
He currently works 25 hours a week in the lab and volunteers an additional 5–10 hours of his time, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. That kind of dedication says a lot. But what stands out most is the deep respect and gratitude he has for his mentor, Dr. Lindsey Mayo. Juan speaks often about how Dr. Mayo has challenged and guided him, not just as a researcher, but as a person.
Juan’s journey to IU Indianapolis is one I love to share. When applying to colleges, he emailed professors at every institution he was considering. Most didn’t reply. A few schools had one faculty member respond. But on our campus, three professors wrote back. That’s when he knew he’d found a place where he’d be seen, where his potential would be met with belief.
Juan, we’re proud you chose IU Indianapolis. Your story is a reminder of what’s possible when students find not just a campus, but a community that believes in them.
