The English for Academic Purpose (EAP) program is administered through the English department in the IU Indianapolis School of Liberal Arts, and includes courses to strengthen students' abilities in the English language. The EAP Placement Test is used to accurately determine English language skill level, and potentially assign EAP courses that best meet students’ needs and help you toward a successful academic career at IU Indianapolis and beyond.
EAP Placement Test for international and non-native English-speaking students
Do I need to take the EAP Placement Test?
If you were required to provide proof of English proficiency for admission purposes, you will probably also be required to take the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Placement Test. Most admitted international students, and most admitted US students whose native language is not English, both undergraduate and graduate, fall into this category.
The charts below will tell you our general policies for who is required to take the EAP test. However, always follow instructions from your admissions office. If you are an international student, your Additional Letter Materials included with your admission letter from the Office of International Affairs will tell you whether you are required to take the test.
Please note that you cannot submit updated English proficiency exams after you are admitted. Whether or not you need to take the EAP test will be determined based on the materials you submitted when you applied. Please keep this in mind when choosing how to show your English proficiency.

How do I take the EAP Placement Test?
The EAP Placement Test is given during the weeks of fall orientation in August and spring orientation in January. If you're required to take it, you'll register for a test time during the orientation activities. International students can find more information in their Pre-Arrival Checklist on Atlas.
If you do not take the test during the August or January orientation week, you can schedule a time at the IU Indianapolis Testing Center.
Please be sure you have set up your IU computing account, launched Canvas at least once, and downloaded the DUO app for IU DUO login before you take the exam.
For graduate students enrolling online
Situations may arise in which graduate students are unable to access EAP testing (for example, students enrolled online full-time). In these cases, graduate students may enroll in the EAP Program’s summer online G513 course prior to taking any other courses and with advanced permission from their graduate program director and the EAP director.
What if I don't take the EAP Placement Test?
If you do not take the test when you've been required to do so, a hold will be placed on your student account preventing you from registering for your second semester classes until you take the test.
What happens after I take the EAP Placement Test?
Depending on the results of your EAP Placement Test, you may need to take EAP courses at the same time as your academic courses for one or two semesters.
The courses that are prescribed to you are required, and you will not be able to graduate without completing them. You should discuss your EAP Placement Test results and plan your EAP courses with your academic advisor.
