Applying for readmission to Indiana University Indianapolis

Welcome home, Jaguar. Whether it has been two semesters or twenty years, the Indiana University degree you started is waiting at IU Indianapolis.

We've created a step-by-step overview of what you need to know as you prepare your application, the steps to take when you're ready to apply for readmission, and what happens after your application is submitted.

If it has been less than two semesters (not including summer sessions) since you enrolled, or if you’re returning from military leave, you don’t need to reapply for admission. Instead, you’ll contact your academic advisor for reactivation.

If you were a student enrolled in the School of Engineering and Technology prior to IUPUI's realignment to IU Indianapolis, you have two options for your return:

If you are looking to enroll in one of IU Indianapolis's 100+ undergraduate majors, you can follow the steps below.
If you are wanting to continue your engineering and technology degree, you will need to contact Purdue University's undergraduate admissions office.

How to apply for admission

The first step towards your readmission to IU Indianapolis. As a former IU Indianapolis student, you'll have more flexibility with our application deadline, since we already have most of your academic information. You can usually apply for admission as a returning student as early as one year before your semester starts.

The application for fall admissions is usually available on or around August 1
The applications for spring and summer admission are usually available on or around February 1

When you're ready to apply, you'll want to make sure to follow the steps below to make sure you are submitting a complete application.

Your first step is to complete our Apply IU application.

When you apply online, you can use your existing IU username and passphrase to log in to the application system, which will minimize the information you'll need to complete. If you don’t remember your username and passphrase, contact the University Information Technology Services Support Center at 317-274-HELP (4357) or ithelp@iu.edu. If you’ve never had a username and passphrase, you’ll be able to create a guest computing account to complete the application.

When you fill out the application, you will search for IU Indianapolis or IUPUI under the "search colleges" tool in the "Academic Info" section. You can also use our CEEB code, which is 1325.

As a returning student, you do not have to pay our $65 application ee, since you've already paid one. If the application requests you to pay another application fee, please get in touch with our office at 317-274-4591, and we'll be happy to help troubleshoot the issue with you.

If you have attended any colleges or universities outside the IU system since you last enrolled here, you must request an official copy of your transcript from each school you attended. This includes:

Any college or university at which you were enrolled but did not complete any classes
Any dual-credit courses or college courses completed while you were in high school

Requesting transcripts

You must contact each school and ask for your official transcript to be sent directly to our office.

IU Indianapolis does accept official transcripts that are sent electronically from colleges and universities. However, we do not accept emailed PDFs of transcripts; your transcript must be electronically generated from an official system.

Electronic transcripts can be sent to mycredit@iu.edu. If your school will be sending limited-time credentials that allow us to access their system, be sure to make your request during regular business hours.

Additionally, you can also have sealed transcripts sent to us via the mail. Transcripts should be mailed to:

If you were academically dismissed, you will need to go through additional steps. If you were previously enrolled in a school other than University College, you may work directly with them to identify your next steps. Or if you were enrolled in University College, you will go through their academic reinstatement process.

Reinstatement petition dates

Please note, the reinstatement petition is only available during the following dates:

Fall semester: April 1 to July 1
Spring semester: August 1 to November 1

After you apply

You can expect to find out whether you’ve been admitted to IU Indianapolis within four to six weeks after we receive all your application materials. While you’re waiting, you can complete these steps:

If you have network previously created an account at IU Indianapolis or for another Indiana University campus, you do not need to create a new one. If needed, you can follow these steps to reset your passphrase. You can also contact the University Information Technology Services help desk at (317) 274-HELP for additional assistance.

If you do not have an account, approximately one week after you apply, you will be able to look up your University ID number. You’ll use this ID number to create your IU Indianapolis computing account, which you’ll use to check the status of your application.

Please note that your IU Indianapolis computing account may be different than the guest computing account you created when you applied online. The guest computing account was solely for the purpose of submitting your application online.

Setting up your account

Go to One.IU, search for “create my first IU account” and select that task. You’ll then be able to create your username and passphrase, passphrase reset questions, and email address.

Please note, it can take up to 24 hours for your account to fully activate.

After you’ve created your IU Indianapolis computing account, you’ll be able to check the status of your application in One.IU. To check your status, go to Application Status in One.IU and select "Start." Log in using your IU Indianapolis username and passphrase (not your guest account information) to see the status of your application.

Selecting a new major, intended start term, or other changes to your application

If you need to make a change to the application you have submitted, you can do so at any time that applications are being accepted for the term for which you have applied. To do so, you'll need to complete our update form, which will send your application to be re-reviewed with the new information.

You can also withdraw your application if you are no longer planning to enroll at IU Indianapolis. Please be aware that if canceled, your application can only be reactivated if the deadlines for the term you are applying have not passed.
