Applying to Indiana University Indianapolis as an international student

If you'll be studying on a non-immigrant visa, you'll be an international student and your application will go through International Admissions in the Office of International Affairs (OIA). The Office of International Affairs will be there to support you with your admission and visa documents.
If you are a US citizen, US Permanent Resident, refugee, asylee, DACA recipient, or undocumented, you won't be considered an international student, so the extra information on this page doesn't apply to you. Your application will go through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (for freshmen or transfers) or the Graduate School (for graduate students).

Submitting application materials as an international applicant
If you are applying for admission to IU Indianapolis as an international applicant on a non-immigrant visa, your process for submitting some application materials to IU Indianapolis is different from students who reside permanently in the US.
After you apply, you'll receive an email to log in to Atlas, our international student web portal, where you can submit materials we need.
First-year undergraduate applicants
If you are applying to college for the first time, or for a new undergraduate degree, you will be a freshman student. Review IU Indianapolis admission requirements for beginning freshman applicants.
You must submit full and complete academic records from every secondary school and university/post-secondary institution you have attended. Your records should also include any coursework currently in progress.
Please provide your records in the original language. If your school is in one of these countries, the original language may be English. If the original language is not English, please also provide an English translation by an official translation agency.
Transcript evaluations by credential evaluation agencies are not necessary.
Submitting academic records
You can have your official documents mailed or sent electronically directly from your previous institution directly to IU Indianapolis. Or, you may mail your sealed, official documents to:

For non-US schools, we can accept electronic copies of your records for admission decision purposes. You can submit electronic copies of your official records by uploading them to the “Submit Academic Records” form in Atlas. Once you are admitted you will be required to submitofficial, original recordsin order to verify their authenticity.
IU Indianapolis is test optional, meaning we do not require SAT or ACT test scores for admission or meritscholarshipconsideration. Instead, we holistically review each application for its individual merits and qualities, including academic performance and preparation, the strength and quality of the school curriculum, your recent grade trends, and class rank. However, if you have taken these exams, you are encouraged to submit them if you would like to use them to meet minimumEnglish proficiency requirements.
If you take a test, you can have your test results sent to IU Indianapolis directly from the testing service using the following School Codes:

If you have completed upper secondary school with at least three years of study in one of the countries listed here, then you have provided proof of English proficiency for undergraduate purposes.
If you plan to enroll at IU Indianapolismore than 3 monthsafter you graduate from secondary school, you will need to give us short explanation of what you have done with your time since graduation.
In order to complete this step, you must fill out the “Submit Explanation of Time Since Last School Attended” form inAtlas.
We want to make sure that we issue you the correct immigration documentation.
If you are currently in the US, it’s important that you complete the “Submit Clarification of your Present Visa Status” form onAtlas. You will be asked to submit copies of your current I-20, I-94, or any other immigration documentation you may have.
This step is especially important if you currently hold an F-1 student visa and will need us to transfer your current SEVIS record to IU Indianapolis.
In order to make sure we have the correct spelling and format of your name on any immigration documentation we issue you, please complete the “Submit a copy of your Passport ID Page” form on Atlas.
For those students who require a student visa (F1 or J1), you must submit financial documentation verifying your ability to pay your tuition and living expenses for one year.
The exact amount you'll be required to show to begin in Fall 2024 will be updated at a later time. Until then, you can see estimated costs here:
To provide your financial information, you must complete the “Submit Financial Support Agreement” and “Submit Financial Documentation” steps on your checklist inAtlas.
While you can be admitted before this, we cannot issue you a visa document until you have completed this step.
Transfer undergraduate applicants
You're currently attending, or previously attended, a college or university. Now you wish to complete your degree at IU Indianapolis. You'll apply as a transfer student. Review IU Indianapolis admission requirements for beginning transfer applicants.
You must submit full and complete academic records from every university or post-secondary institution you have attended. Your records should also include any coursework currently in progress.
If your university or post-secondary coursework will transfer to less than 26 credit hours at IU Indianapolis, we will also need your secondary school transcripts.
Please provide your records in the original language. If your school is in one of these countries, the original language may be English. If the original language is not English, please also provide an English translation by an official translation agency.

Graduate and professional applicants
Your initial application requirements will vary depending on the master's, doctoral, or professional program you are applying to. Be sure to provide all documentation your department requests via your application or to your department directly. Your admission decision and financial aid are also handled by your department. After your department makes an admission decision, they will forward your application materials to International Admissions for final processing. However, we may request some materials from you directly.
As part of your application, you must submit electronic copies of your full and complete academic records from every university/post-secondary institution you have attended. Your records should also include any in-progress coursework. These will be received by your department first, along with your application.
Please provide your documents in the original language. If the original language is not English, please also provide an English translation by the issuing university or an official translation agency.
In most cases, electronic copies of your records are used to make your admissions decision. Once you are fully admitted, we'll need official records sealed in an envelope from your institution in order to verify their authenticity. It's a good idea start preparing these documents as soon as possible.
All international applicants will need to show a certain level of English proficiency.
Please upload your documentation of English proficiency with your application, and your department will forward it to International Admissions for final review.
If you take the TOEFL test, you can request that the testing agency sends the electronic score reports to Indiana University Indianapolis. Our testing services code is 1325.

For those students who require a F-1 student visa, you must submit financial documentation verifying your ability to pay your tuition and living expenses. If someone other than yourself is providing funds, you will also need to submit theFinancial Support Agreement.These items should be uploaded through yourAtlasaccount.
Graduate tuition may vary depending on your program. You can review graduate tuition costs here. In addition to tuition, you'll need to show approximately an additional $19,000 for fees, living expenses, books, and health insurance. Exact amounts you'll need to show for Fall 2024 will be coming soon.
While you can be admitted without it, we will not be able to issue you the documentation you will need for your visa appointment until you have completed this step.
