Applying for graduate non-degree admission to Indiana University Indianapolis
We're glad that you are interested in taking classes at IU Indianapolis as a graduate non-degree student. If admitted, you will be eligible to take graduate courses (500-level or higher). If you have earned your bachelor's degree but want to take only *undergraduate courses (400-level or lower), or you have not yet finished your bachelor's degree, you must apply for admission as an undergraduate non-degree student.
*You will be assessed the graduate level tuition rate for any undergraduate courses you take as a graduate non-degree student.
Three reasons students choose graduate non-degree admission:
To take courses for personal or professional enrichment
To explore courses for potential future enrollment in a graduate/professional degree program*
To take a course for licensing*
* For more information, please see "Talk to the program who offers your classes before applying" below.
Who is eligible for graduate non-degree admission?
You must hold at least a bachelor’s degree for acceptance into the graduate non-degree program.
Important considerations for graduate non-degree admissions
Generally, students enrolled in the GND program are not eligible for financial aid.
Possible exception: if you need graduate classes as prerequisites for your desired graduate program
Review and submit the Non-Degree Prerequisite Verification Form which is available by contacting the Office of Student Financial Aid. This form must be completed and then signed by a representative from your chosen graduate program before submission to Financial Aid for consideration.
If your intention is to apply to a graduate program in the future or you are taking classes for licensure, please contact the graduate department you’re interested in to determine your best admission and course options. After consulting with the department, and confirming the GND program is a good fit for you, the next step is to apply.
If you intend to apply to a graduate/professional program and want the GND courses to be transferred to that program, you must achieve at least a 3.0 in all courses.
You must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 even if you do not intend to apply to a graduate/professional program.
If you plan to apply to a graduate/professional program, contact the department/school to determine the maximum GND credits that can be accepted. You should not acquire more than 9 to 12 graduate hours in a school or department.
You cannot take classes as Pass/Fall.
You cannot acquire more than 18 graduate credit hours in a school or department, unless you receive special permission from the department, which must be communicated from the program advisor to the GND coordinator by email.
You may need departmental approval/permission for certain courses taken as a GND student before you can register.
