Steps to apply for FAFSA
You can use financial aid to pay for the academic year, summer term, or study abroad. Use school code 001813.
Check your eligibility
Most students are encouraged to submit a FAFSA, even if you’re uncertain about your eligibility due to your family’s income. If you’re an international student or pursuing a certificate rather than a degree, you should verify that you’re eligible.
Gather necessary documents and info for FAFSA
The items you will need when filing your FAFSA include:
- A Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID for you (and one of your parents, if you are a dependent). This is a username and password combination that you create and use to securely access your financial aid information and electronically sign your FAFSA.
- Create your StudentAid.gov account before starting the FAFSA form.
- IU Indianapolis federal school code 001813.
- Your tax information from two years before the academic year for which you’re seeking aid.
- Your Social Security number, as well as your parents’ Social Security numbers if you’re a dependent.
- If you aren’t a U.S. citizen, you will need your alien registration number, also known as your alien number, A-Number, or USCIS#.
- Federal tax returns, records of child support received, current balances of cash, savings, and checking accounts, and net worth of investments, businesses, and farm.

Verify your info, accept your aid
Depending on the aid you are offered, there is plenty to do after you apply–from formally accepting what you need to, signing loan documents, or completing your Title IV authorization.

Most types of aid award by IU Indianapolis are need-based and calculated by subtracting your Student Aid Index number from your cost of attendance. Keep in mind that there’s no guarantee you’ll receive the whole amount you need to cover all of your expenses.
