Before you drop or add a class, understand how it will impact your grades, finances, and student status.

Dropping and adding classes: Things to consider

Department-specific rules

Some academic programs have certain rules for dropping and adding classes. Check in with your advisor before changing your schedule.

Timing

The timing of when you decide to drop or add a class will determine where you go to make the request and who will need to approve it. When dropping a course, the timing will also determine if additional documentation is needed before approval and if you will end up with a W (withdrawn) grade or not.

Finances

Dropping and adding classes can affect your financial aid, scholarship status, and tuition cost. Be sure to talk with your academic advisor or faculty chair first. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships can help if you’re worried about what could happen with your finances.

Steps

You are responsible for taking the appropriate steps outlined on this page to officially add or drop a class. Not doing so may cause you to get an F in a course you didn’t attend—or not get credit or a grade for a course you did attend. Please remember that lack of attendance or not paying for a course does not result in an automatic drop.

Making changes through the first week of classes

You can drop and add classes from the time you first register for a semester through the first week of fall and spring semester or through the end of the third day of each summer session. If you drop a class during this time, it won’t show up on your transcript. If you want to avoid getting a W (withdrawn) grade, make sure to drop the class during the drop/add period.

If you want to drop all your classes for the semester, you must withdraw from the university.
